1. Phu Quoc LRT Line Project with a Scale of Nearly 9,000 Billion VND
Officially commenced on December 19, 2025, the Phu Quoc LRT light rail line is being implemented in its first phase under the BOT model, with Sun Group as the investor. The project has a total capital of nearly 9,000 billion VND and is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2027. This is considered a key infrastructure project, playing the role of the "backbone" in orienting urban space development and enhancing the public transportation capacity of the "Pearl Island".
Technically, LRT is a light rail urban railway system powered by electricity on rails, capable of transporting a medium number of passengers, operating flexibly on the ground, elevated, or underground. This model is considered suitable for tourist cities due to its environmental friendliness and operational efficiency.
Sun Group is currently the first private enterprise in Vietnam to directly invest in an LRT urban railway line. When the project officially becomes operational, Phu Quoc will also become the first locality in the country to own a modern urban transportation system of this model.

2. Where is the Phu Quoc LRT expected to pass through?
Phu Quoc LRT light rail line is planned along the provincial road DT.975 with a 10-lane cross-section, serving as a strategic connection line between Phu Quoc International Airport and the APEC Convention Center. The establishment of this modern public transport line will not only serve major events but also meet the increasing travel needs of residents and tourists.
According to the design plan, the LRT line has a total length of 17.59 km, flexibly combining elevated, at-grade, and underground sections. The system includes 6 stations, with 5 at-grade stations and 1 underground station located in the APEC Convention Center area, optimizing accessibility to key functional areas.
The operating vehicle is a 3-car electric train set, running at a design speed of 70 to 100 km/h, with a transport capacity of about 4,500 passengers per hour. When operational, the LRT line is expected to shorten the travel time from the airport to the APEC Convention Center as well as to tourist areas in the south of the island such as Sunset Town to about 20 minutes.

In the long-term orientation, the Phu Quoc LRT line will continue to be studied for extension to the Duong Dong area and An Thoi Port to expand its service scope. Using zero-emission energy sources, the project is considered an important solution to reduce pressure on road infrastructure, limit personal vehicles, and promote a green, sustainable public transport model for the Jade Island.
3. The role of the LRT line in elevating Phu Quoc tourism
The implementation of the LRT light rail line not only solves traffic problems but also opens up an important transition in how Phu Quoc enhances the quality of tourist experiences. With direct connectivity from Phu Quoc International Airport to resorts, entertainment complexes, event squares, and the APEC Convention Center, the LRT is expected to become a convenient, safe, and stable transportation option for tourists, especially international visitors with high service demands.
Upon operation, the LRT line will contribute to shaping the image of a more modern, synchronized, and professional Phu Quoc in the eyes of international friends. This advanced public transport model helps the Jade Island approach the operational standards of leading developed tourist destinations in the region and the world, such as Singapore or Dubai, thereby enhancing its competitiveness on the international tourism map.

Alongside its role in promoting tourism, the Phu Quoc LRT project also clearly demonstrates the orientation of island-sea urban development towards sustainability. The use of zero-emission energy sources helps minimize the impact on the natural environment, contributing to the preservation of the island-sea ecosystem in the context of the increasing number of tourists. The light rail line is not just a means of transportation, but also a symbol of green transportation thinking, contributing to reducing pressure on the road system and limiting the increase of personal vehicles.
From a strategic perspective, the LRT plays a leading role in urban development space, creating a superior advantage for Phu Quoc in attracting high-end customers and large-scale MICE events. Seamless connectivity between the airport, resorts, and the APEC Convention Center enhances the visitor experience, while also creating an important foundation for Phu Quoc to become a destination for international conferences, seminars, and events.
