Overview of the Phu Quoc International Airport Expansion Investment Project

The Phu Quoc International Airport expansion investment project was approved in principle on June 19, 2025, with Sun Aviation Airport Joint Stock Company – Sun Group Corporation as the investor under a business investment form. According to the approved plan, the airport will meet Class 4E standards as stipulated by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), allowing it to accommodate wide-body aircraft such as Boeing 747, Boeing 787, and Airbus A350. The project covers a total area of approximately 1,050 hectares, increasing the airport's operating capacity from 2027 to 20 million passengers per year and will continue to expand in phase 2 to reach a scale of 50 million passengers per year.

Regarding technical infrastructure, the project includes expanding the existing runway number 1 to a length of 3,500 m and constructing a new runway number 2 with a length of 3,300 m. The apron system will be expanded to over 120 aircraft parking positions, meeting the high long-term operating demand. The facility will be equipped with modern equipment, capable of serving special flights for up to 300 people, and is expected to host heads of state within the framework of APEC 2027 and other significant events in Phu Quoc in the future.

Phu Quoc International Airport after expansion will be consulted on operations by Changi Airport Group – the unit currently managing and operating Changi Airport (Singapore). The airport will synchronously apply many advanced aviation technologies such as the Total Airport Management (TAM) model, biometric system for contactless journeys, modern baggage handling system ICS, security screening system from Smiths Detection (Germany), along with automated parking solutions, underground refueling, and modern jet bridges. The goal is to aim for the leading smart airport standard in the region, while shortening passenger check-in time to about 15–20 seconds per person.

It is known that passenger terminal T2 was designed by CPG Consultants (Singapore) and Artelia Airport (France), inspired by the image of the Fire Phoenix, symbolizing strength and rebirth.

Meanwhile, the VIP terminal, with a construction area of 6,000m2, is designed inspired by the image of a sea eagle – a symbol of freedom, agility, and harmony with nature.

Not only attracting attention with its scale and specific functions, the VIP terminal design of Phu Quoc International Airport also raises questions about the person behind this iconic architectural idea. From the inspiration of the sea eagle to how the work dialogues with the natural landscape, the creative imprint highlights the central role of the architect in shaping the spatial identity. That is also why Marco Casamonti – the 'father' of the Kiss Bridge in Phu Quoc becomes a name worth mentioning when talking about the architectural appearance of the VIP terminal and the design vision for this project.

About Marco Casamonti - the designer of the VIP Terminal of Phu Quoc International Airport

Marco Casamonti is one of Italy's leading contemporary architects, behind many projects imbued with artistic spirit, iconic status, and a mindset closely linked to the natural landscape. He is the founder and chief architect of Archea Associati – a renowned architectural studio based in Florence, with a strong presence in Europe and Asia. For Marco Casamonti, architecture is not just about form or construction techniques, but a storytelling language, where each project must dialogue with local culture, history, and the surrounding environment.

Marco Casamonti's design philosophy is consistent in its profound minimalism, emphasizing emotion and symbolism. He often draws on rich metaphorical imagery from nature, living beings, or cultural elements to transform them into soft yet powerful architectural forms. This approach has helped his works easily become 'icons', not only visually but also in human experience when interacting with space.

In Vietnam, Marco Casamonti collaborated with Sun Group to create the iconic Kiss Bridge in Phu Quoc.

Kiss Bridge is a blend of Renaissance spirit, inspired by Michelangelo's painting The Creation of Adam, while also imbued with an Eastern essence, reminiscent of the legend of Ong Ngau and Ba Ngau. The two branches, North Wing and South Wing, are 800m long. Although they do not touch (separated by 30 cm), they are close enough to share a hug, a kiss, or a handshake, under the vibrant red sunset.

After the Kiss Bridge, the talented architect continues to collaborate with Sun Group to design the VIP terminal of Phu Quoc International Airport. With the involvement of Marco Casamonti, this will certainly not just be an ordinary terminal but also become a new symbol for the breakthrough development phase of the Jade Island.
