According to the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism, diving tourism has become a rising trend, offering “addictive” adventures that are especially popular among young travelers and international tourists. A recent survey conducted by Agoda across 11 countries revealed that up to 40% of travelers are willing to spend an additional 15 - 30% on diving experiences. Notably, 75% of diving enthusiasts prioritize destinations with coral reefs - a key factor that helps Asia, particularly Southeast Asia, maintain its reputation as an underwater exploration paradise.

Agoda ranks Vietnam among Asia’s most spectacular diving destinations

With over 3,000 kilometers of coastline, thousands of islands, and a rich coastal cultural identity, Vietnam holds significant potential for diving tourism. From Nha Trang and Cu Lao Cham to Phu Quoc Island, each coastal region boasts its own unique marine ecosystem, blending natural beauty with increasingly professional tourism services. Among them, Phu Quoc stands out as the diving capital of Vietnam. Often referred to the “pearl island” of the country, Phu Quoc is a key reason why Vietnam has earned its spot among Asia’s top diving destinations.

Phu Quoc stands out with its ideal natural conditions - from its year-round mild climate and crystal-clear waters to excellent underwater visibility and a vibrant ecosystem of coral reefs and marine life. Together, these elements create a perfect tropical setting where travelers can effortlessly immerse themselves in the ocean, embracing a sense of freedom, serenity, and exhilaration - a sensory-rich experience that both excites and soothes the soul.

Phu Quoc Island boasts crystal-clear waters, perfect for diving adventures

When it comes to diving in Phu Quoc, the island’s southern region is a must-mention highlight. Home to some of the clearest waters and most vibrant coral reefs on the island, South Phu Quoc is the ideal spot for all types of diving adventures - from scuba diving for beginners, to free diving for thrill-seekers, and relaxed snorkeling perfect for families.

Visitors can marvel at vibrant coral reefs on Phu Quoc Island

The highlight of any underwater adventure in South Phu Quoc is the iconic Three-Island Tour, which takes visitors to Mong Tay Island, Gam Ghi Island and May Rut Island - a signature Phu Quoc experience that draws thousands of travelers, especially international tourists, each year. The journey begins at Mong Tay Island, a popular check-in spot surrounded by untouched natural beauty. From there, speedboats whisk visitors to Gam Ghi Island - a true diving paradise where vibrant coral reefs and schools of tropical fish await just below the surface. Here, guests can choose between snorkeling or scuba diving with professional instructors to explore the vivid underwater world. The final stop is May Rut Island, an idyllic island retreat where visitors can unwind on the beach, take scenic photos, enjoy a refreshing swim, and savor freshly caught seafood by the shore.

Visitors experience “sea walking” at Sun World Hon Thom

Another must-visit diving spot in South Phu Quoc is Sun World Hon Thom, which has become a hotspot for ocean lovers. Here, visitors can try the unique “sea walking” experience - walking on the ocean floor with modern equipment and guidance from professionally trained instructors, all within a well-preserved marine environment. This accessible underwater adventure is designed for everyone, from children to the elderly, and even those who can’t swim - thanks to specialized oxygen helmets and attentive support from the experienced dive team.

These are perfect choices for travelers eager to be surrounded by vibrant schools of fish and witness colorful coral reefs up close. What makes the diving journey even more unforgettable is the ride to Hon Thom aboard the world’s longest three-cable gondola. This spectacular aerial experience offers breathtaking panoramic views of the vast southern seas of Phu Quoc. To top it all off, a visit to Aquatopia Water Park on Hon Thom Island - with a wide range of rides from gentle to thrilling - promises to turn the trip into a full-fledged, unforgettable island adventure.

The Hon Thom cable car offers visitors a breathtaking “flight” over the ocean

The ideal time to enjoy diving in Phu Quoc is from November to April, when the island enters its dry season. During this period, the weather is sunny and pleasant with minimal rainfall, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in their ocean adventures in the most comfortable conditions. The sea is also at its clearest, making it easier to explore the vibrant underwater world.  That said, diving experiences in Phu Quoc are still possible and largely unaffected during the rainy season, offering flexibility for travelers year-round.

In addition to Vietnam, Agoda’s ranking also highlights many other renowned diving destinations across Asia. Topping the list is Indonesia - the number one favorite among diving enthusiasts - followed by the Philippines, Thailand, and Malaysia.
