2. Formation history of Phuoc Thanh Temple

About 165 years ago, Venerable Monk Buu Duc from Cu Lao Gieng came to the wild That Son region to seek Buddhist teachings, practice asceticism, and built a temple named Thanh Tuyen. With the aspiration to propagate Buddhism, he intended to stay long-term and continue his spiritual path in this sacred land, where mountains and nature still retained their rare pristine beauty.

Nine years later, when Venerable Monk Buu Duc returned to his hometown of Cu Lao Gieng, a strange phenomenon occurred when a pair of flamingos, a species that only appears in the That Son region, unexpectedly flew with him all the way to Cu Lao. The appearance of the strange pair of birds caused birds all over the area to chirp and fly across the fields as a special welcome. Realizing this was a good omen, the Venerable Monk believed that the heavens had destined his resting place, and thus built Phuoc Thanh Temple in the land where many birds gathered. For this reason, local people affectionately call this place the Bird Temple.

Through many stages of development, Phuoc Thanh Temple was renovated and expanded under the guidance of Venerable Thich Hue Tai, Head of the Executive Board of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha of An Giang Province and also the abbot of the temple. In 1973, the temple was first renovated, and in 2005, it continued to be rebuilt with many important sections such as the main hall, the ancestral hall, the east wing, the west wing, the bell tower, and the drum tower. Notably, in 2012, the temple built a complex of Amitabha Buddha statues 39m high along with 48 Bodhisattva statues 5m high, all made of reinforced concrete and connected by an aerial bridge with ancient architecture combined with Buddhism. Thanks to its unique architecture and impressive scale, Phuoc Thanh Temple Cho Moi is considered one of the most distinctive architectural temples in An Giang, leaving a strong impression on visitors from all over.
