As approved under Decision No. 427/QD-BXD, Phu Quoc International Airport will undergo a comprehensive investment and expansion, designed to support the province’s socio-economic development and tourism growth, while also ensuring sufficient transportation infrastructure to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in 2027.

The master plan rendering of Phu Quoc International Airport was presented at the announcement conference

The proposed plan, as presented at the announcement conference, outlines a total development area of approximately 1,050 hectares. The projected investment capital is VND 26,572 billion by 2030, with an additional VND 25,791 billion anticipated by 2050.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Uong Viet Dung, Director of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, emphasized: "This approved master plan lays a crucial foundation for Kien Giang Province to implement synchronized investment projects to modernize the infrastructure of Phu Quoc International Airport. This not only contributes to the successful organization of APEC 2027, but also propels Phu Quoc City to become one of the region's premier destinations."

According to the project presentation by ADCC, a leading Vietnamese aviation construction consultancy, Phu Quoc Airport will be expanded with a target capacity of 18 million passengers per year by APEC 2027—4.5 times its current capacity of 4 million. By 2050, the airport is expected to handle up to 50 million passengers annually.

In addition to the existing runway, a second runway will be constructed. The two runways will be 3,500 meters and 3,300 meters in length respectively, ensuring safe and efficient operations for wide-body aircraft and long-haul international flights from Europe and the U.S.

The aircraft apron will also be expanded to accommodate 70 to 80 parking positions, allowing for the reception of heads of state and senior leaders from APEC economies during the 2027 event, and meeting long-term demand for hosting international events in Phu Quoc.

The terminal design was created by Singapore-based consultancy CPG Consultants

A highlight of the airport is the passenger terminal, designed by Singapore-based consultancy CPG Airport. The architectural concept is inspired by the soaring wings of a phoenix, symbolizing national pride and ambition. The terminal will feature international-standard jet bridges, separate terminals for international and domestic flights, a commercial center, and exhibition areas. The facility will incorporate cutting-edge technologies including remote check-in, automated baggage sorting, and biometric identification, reducing immigration processing time to just 15–30 seconds per passenger.

A newly built VVIP terminal will welcome heads of state, designed by Italian architect Marco Casamonti, the creative mind behind the iconic Kiss Bridge in Phu Quoc. This terminal draws inspiration from the eagle ray, representing freedom and fluidity across the ocean. The overall plan also includes the development of auxiliary facilities such as a cargo terminal and radar systems.

Previously, Phu Quoc had unveiled a series of major projects in preparation for APEC 2027, including the multifunctional APEC Complex with a 10,000-square-meter Convention and Exhibition Center, a multifunctional auditorium, International Media Center, APEC Square, a duty-free shopping mall, and a cultural and art center. Additional investments have been channeled into main roads connecting the airport with the city center, urban landscaping, smart traffic systems, and other infrastructure enhancements that reflect Phu Quoc’s commitment to sustainable growth.

In 2025, Phu Quoc targets welcoming 7 million visitors, further underscoring the urgent need to expand its international airport

With strategic projects being simultaneously deployed, especially the expansion of Phu Quoc International Airport to a capacity of 18 million passengers annually before APEC 2027, the island city is steadily affirming its position as a new economic, tourism, and conference hub in the region and beyond. These initiatives not only serve APEC 2027 but also lay the groundwork for Phu Quoc to break through, attract investment, and enhance its competitiveness and global integration in the coming years.
