Recently, Sun Group officially received approval to invest in the expansion project of Phu Quoc International Airport, with a total investment of nearly VND 22 trillion. The project marks a technological breakthrough in aviation, as for the first time in Vietnam, many of the world’s most advanced operational technologies will be applied in a synchronized manner.

The airport expansion project is designed by CPG Consultants and Artelia Airport – leading airport design firms based in Singapore and France. Aiming for completion before APEC 2027 and with a total investment of nearly VND 22 trillion, the airport is expected to deliver a world-class, seamless, and intelligent travel experience, enhancing Phu Quoc’s appeal right from its “gateway.”

The terminal’s design is inspired by the image of the Phoenix – a bird symbolizing power and noble beauty.

To meet the target of 20 million passengers/year, the Total Airport Management (TAM) model will be implemented in Phu Quoc. This is a comprehensive integration solution for all airport operations, from landside to airside, including passenger flow, baggage, flight coordination, and security, optimizing operations, minimizing disruptions, and enhancing performance and passenger experience.
Passengers will be notified via display screens or mobile apps about queue times, gate changes, etc., minimizing waiting time. The airport can allocate more staff, open additional counters, or adjust passenger flow based on real-time data, easing congestion. Ground transportation including buses, taxis, and pick-up/drop-off services will also be smoothly managed to reduce surface-level traffic jams.
Passengers arriving and departing from Phu Quoc International Airport in the future will enjoy a seamless, contactless journey through biometric integration at all touchpoints – from check-in, security screening, boarding, to automated baggage counters. Identity verification through facial recognition or fingerprints speeds up processing to just 15–20 seconds/person, reducing queues while ensuring data security.

Modern technologies help minimize waiting time and streamline the check-in process.

Another major breakthrough lies in the baggage handling system. For departing luggage, Phu Quoc will implement the Individual Carrier System – a modern baggage transport system where each bag is placed in an individual tray. This allows up to 99.99% tracking accuracy of each item, minimizing loss or delay.
For arriving luggage, the airport will use high-capacity inclined conveyors integrated with automated scanning and suspicious item tagging. This accelerates processing and reduces congestion at exits – a common issue at many international airports. Customs officers no longer need to sit at each scanner, as images will be sent to a centralized hub, minimizing personnel needs.
Phu Quoc International Airport will be expanded to more than 100 parking bays, including 71 directly connected to modern passenger bridges. A direct fueling system via underground pipelines will be used instead of traditional fuel trucks, enhancing safety while reducing emissions, noise, and turnaround times.
More than 20 baggage carousels will operate simultaneously for both arrivals and departures, enabling the airport to handle more flights during peak hours and reduce reliance on late evening or night flights.

Phu Quoc International Airport will also apply remotely controlled passenger bridges and automatic taxiway lighting systems...

Only 18 months remain to complete the project before APEC 2027. Mr. Bui Thanh Trung, Chairman of Sun Group Southern Region, pledged: “We understand that these are not merely projects serving APEC 2027’s success, but strategic infrastructures that will empower Phu Quoc’s breakthrough. Thus, we commit to mobilize the highest level of resources and full focus to not only meet but exceed the schedule, ensuring the highest economic efficiency for Phu Quoc International Airport and the two APEC investment projects, as well as future developments.”
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nhan, Chairman of Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee, stated: “To successfully host APEC 2027, Phu Quoc must have a modern, synchronized, and world-class infrastructure foundation. Phu Quoc International Airport is a pivotal project, which must be completed before Q2/2027 to ensure capacity to welcome international delegations. This project will play a long-term role in shaping the development, connectivity, and integration landscape of Phu Quoc, Kien Giang, and Vietnam in the future.”
With a huge investment and integration of the world’s leading technologies, the expansion project will place Phu Quoc International Airport on par with the world’s most advanced airports. It is a strategic move by Sun Group to elevate tourism infrastructure and strongly connect Phu Quoc with regional and global aviation hubs, contributing to making Phu Quoc a new global tourism–economic center in the future.
