1. Vision: Transforming Phu Quoc into an International Hub

Under the leadership of General Secretary To Lam, Phu Quoc is designated as a strategic special zone, with ambitions to become an international hub for ecology, tourism, finance, and innovation. This initiative not only elevates the island's regional economic status but also anchors Vietnam’s ocean-based economy and global integration efforts.

The core of this strategy focuses on developing Phu Quoc into a world-class ecological tourism and resort destination, alongside a robust financial services sector, blue economy, high-tech industry, and innovation. Tailored policies and flexible administrative models will create an adaptive investment climate to attract both domestic and international strategic investors.

In parallel, the Long Xuyen–Chau Doc–Rach Gia–Ha Tien regional quadrangle will evolve into an industrial, logistics, and cultural powerhouse—shaping a high-competitive new economy. Consequently, Phu Quoc will be at the center of reimagining the Mekong Delta's value in the national and global economic landscape.

2. Laying the Foundation: Infrastructure as Strategic Launchpad

Integrated, high-quality infrastructure is essential for realizing Phu Quoc’s future special status. A major pillar is expanding the island's air transport capacity.

Under newly released plans, Phu Quoc International Airport will quadruple capacity to 20 million annual passengers by APEC 2027. The project includes adding two runways, expanding aprons, and constructing a modern passenger terminal, positioning Phu Quoc to handle a surge of international visitors and laying strong groundwork for future growth.

The emergence of Sun PhuQuoc Airways, the first Vietnamese airline named after a destination, complements these infrastructure investments. Operating on a hub-and-spoke model, the airline will connect Phu Quoc with key national and international economic and tourism centers. This synergy, with airport expansion, will open new gateways for global travelers to reach Phu Quoc, and for the island to connect with the world.

Beyond aviation, the island is speeding up construction of roads, urban centers, and tourism‑finance infrastructure to fully support its special-zone vision.

3. APEC 2027: A Golden Opportunity for International Visibility

APEC 2027 is not just a diplomatic milestone, it’s an opportunity for Phu Quoc to assert itself globally as a center for ecology, tourism, finance, and innovation. Hosting delegates from 21 economies, the event will extend Phu Quoc’s image and appeal to the world.

4. A New Growth Engine for Phu Quoc and the Mekong Delta

By becoming a hub of ecology, tourism, finance, and innovation, and anchored by APEC 2027, Phu Quoc is on the cusp of transformation. Long known as a premier beach destination, the island is set to become a Mekong Delta growth engine and reshape that region’s role in Vietnam’s economic strategy.

With advanced airport infrastructure, special-zone policies, and growing tourism-finance ecosystems, the island is poised to attract global investor interest and expand its economic footprint across tourism, services, and creative industries.
