Posted on 26 Tháng 12, 2025
In the process of developing into an international-level coastal city and tourism and service center, Phu Quoc is increasingly facing higher demands on its social infrastructure system, especially healthcare. Alongside the 2 existing hospitals, the emergence of Phu Quoc Sun International Hospital is expected to complete the international-standard healthcare ecosystem on the Jade Island, bringing modern emergency and treatment capabilities directly to residents and tourists. More than just a medical facility, this project is positioned as a strategic piece, contributing to enhancing the quality of life and the image of Phu Quoc on the regional map.

1. Medical Overview in Phu Quoc During its International Transformation Phase

From a famous resort destination, Phu Quoc is entering a new development phase with the orientation to become a coastal city - a regional hub for tourism, services, and events. The strong increase in international tourists, a high-quality resident community, and major events pose increasingly high demands on the social infrastructure system, of which healthcare is an indispensable pillar.

In reality, the healthcare system in Phu Quoc has made certain progress over time, but there is still a gap compared to the needs of a "Pearl Island" deeply integrating into the international flow. Public healthcare plays a foundational role in the health care of the local population, while private and international healthcare has begun to serve tourists and high-end residents. However, specialized treatment capabilities such as emergency care, intensive care, cardiology and stroke, or fields related to aesthetics and beauty are still limited, especially as Phu Quoc aims for the position of an international-class coastal city.

2. How Many Hospitals Are There in Phu Quoc?

Currently, the hospital system in Phu Quoc includes two large-scale facilities directly involved in the healthcare network for residents and tourists.

2.1. Vinmec Phu Quoc International General Hospital

Officially operational since June 2015, Vinmec Phu Quoc General Hospital is built on a campus of over 10,000 m2 with 6 floors, a capacity of nearly 150 beds, 11 functional rooms, and 10 specialized departments, equipped with modern medical machinery and equipment from around the world.

Vinmec Phu Quoc General Hospital started operating in 2015.

The hospital is equipped with synchronized infrastructure, modern equipment, and a team of domestic and international doctors, providing examination and treatment services across many specialties, including general internal medicine - surgery, obstetrics - gynecology, pediatrics, 24/7 emergency resuscitation, along with diagnostic imaging and laboratory services. This is a medical facility that well meets the demand for high-quality healthcare, especially in the context of Phu Quoc's strong development in tourism and services.

2.2. Phu Quoc Medical Center

Phu Quoc Medical Center, commonly known as Phu Quoc Hospital, is the largest and oldest public medical facility on the island with a capacity of 400 beds, serving almost all patients on the island. The hospital functions as a general examination and treatment center with basic specialties, primarily serving local residents and workers living on the island. With its location in the central area, the hospital provides easy access to essential medical services for the people, while also playing a frontline role in receiving and handling common illnesses as well as initial emergencies.

Phu Quoc Medical Center, often called Phu Quoc Hospital, is the largest public healthcare facility on Pearl Island.

Overall, with two hospitals in operation, the existing healthcare system in Phu Quoc has somewhat met the basic medical examination and treatment needs and high-quality medical services. However, given the rapid development of Pearl Island and the increasing demands for specialized treatment, emergency care, and intensive care, this system still needs to be supplemented with more specialized and larger-scale hospitals in the coming time.

3.1. Organizational model and 9 specialized departments system

Phu Quoc Sun International Hospital is oriented to develop as a general hospital, with an organizational structure comprising 9 specialized departments, 3 supervisory support rooms, and 6 operational rooms, ensuring a synchronized and professional medical management apparatus from the initial stage.

The hospital's specialized departments include: Emergency Department, Pediatric Examination Department, General Examination Department, Diagnostic Imaging Department, Laboratory Department, Anesthesia - Pain Relief Department, Endoscopy Department, Intensive Care - Toxicology Department, Aesthetics Department, and Rehabilitation Department (departments to be deployed in phases according to the operational roadmap). This structure allows the hospital to fully meet the examination - diagnosis - treatment - resuscitation - recovery cycle, especially in the context of Phu Quoc being a sea and island tourist destination with diverse and specific medical needs.

3.2. Functionality and medical space organization

In Phase 1, Phu Quoc Sun International Hospital focuses on operating core functional areas, including the Emergency Area, Diagnostic Imaging Department with a 3.0 Tesla MRI system, 512-slice CT Scanner, digital X-Ray, Mammography, ultrasound, and bone densitometry, along with the Pediatric Examination, General Examination, Laboratory, Anesthesia - Pain Relief, Endoscopy, and Intensive Care - Toxicology departments. Technical floors and logistical areas are arranged reasonably to ensure continuous operation and medical safety.

In Phase 2, the hospital will expand with standard inpatient, VIP inpatient, VVIP inpatient, and isolation inpatient areas, while completing the Aesthetics and Rehabilitation departments, thereby enhancing long-term treatment capacity and post-treatment care. The phased spatial organization clearly reflects a well-planned, flexible, and sustainable investment approach.

3.3. Key specialized services according to project orientation

24/7 emergency services are one of the specialized pillars of Phu Quoc Sun International Hospital, with the capability to receive and handle urgent medical situations for both residents and tourists. The hospital focuses on developing Intensive Care - Toxicology, closely coordinating with diagnostic imaging and laboratory systems to shorten patient processing time.

The International Sun Phu Quoc Hospital, once completed, promises to be a reputable medical facility with modern infrastructure on Ngoc Island.

Specifically, the hospital is oriented to implement intensive resuscitation with mechanical ventilation and ECMO, allowing for the treatment of severe cases directly on the island. Alongside this is the air-sea ambulance service, utilizing helicopters and medical jets, coordinating directly with Phu Quoc International Airport to receive or transfer patients in special situations. These services are built in sync with workflows with international insurance, embassies, and related units, meeting the medical requirements of international tourists and major events.

3.4. Vision, Mission, and Expected Opening Time

With the orientation to become an internationally standardized hospital, The International Sun Phu Quoc Hospital aims not only to care for community health but also to serve as a strategic medical center for Phu Quoc and the region. The hospital pursues a development model integrating healthcare, tourism, and wellness, aligning with the direction of elevating Ngoc Island in the integration phase.

According to the project plan, The International Sun Phu Quoc Hospital is expected to open in March 2026, marking a significant advancement in Phu Quoc's medical capabilities and completing one of the crucial infrastructure pillars for the island's long-term development.

4. Phu Quoc's International Standard Medical Future

The emergence of a large-scale hospital like The International Sun Phu Quoc Hospital, with its substantial investment in facilities and specialized orientation, signifies a clear transformation in Phu Quoc's healthcare sector during this new development phase. Moving from heavy reliance on patient transfers, the island's healthcare system is gradually being perfected, capable of meeting both routine medical needs and complex medical situations on-site.

More importantly, this change is not just about adding a medical facility but about a comprehensive upgrade in service quality, emergency response capabilities, and operational standards. With healthcare positioned correctly as an essential infrastructure pillar, Phu Quoc gains a solid foundation to develop in parallel with tourism, attract investment, and move towards the image of a modern, safe, and sustainable coastal city in the region.
